Madge Pocock has been one of the NFDOG “family” since the launch. The death in June 2007 of her Sheltie, Skye, was a blow to her, especially since the dog was only eight. Madge assumed that with no dog, she would have to leave NFDOG, adding to her distress. But NFDOG told Madge that she was more than welcome to stay in the group, with or without a dog. “I was so relieved,” said Madge from New Milton. “I support everything NFDOG does and always enjoy their Newsletter. The thought of no longer being a member was upsetting and so I am delighted that I can continue to be in the group.” Membership Secretary Penny Gayler said:” We are anxious to get the message across that you do not have to be a current dog owner to be a member. We have lots of supporters whose dogs have died but keep up their membership. “They believe that our campaign to protect the traditional freedom to walk dogs in the Forest is worth backing.” Brockenhurst member Helga Parker came up with another example of a non-dog owner who joined up. Helga regularly waxes lyrical about the pleasure her Labrador, Louey, gets from walking off lead. Her friend Mike Joiner was so taken by Helga’s enthusiasm, he signed up even though he has no intention of ever owning a dog.
