THE SWEET SMELL OF JASMINE

All that could be seen of Jasmine during a walk on Lymington salt marsh were her four legs waving in the air.

Owner Caroline Templeton knew exactly what that meant. Four-year-old collie/terrier cross Jasmine had found something horrible in which to roll. Something truly horrible.

“She looked really chuffed with herself when she came back but the stench was the most appalling I have ever experienced,” said Caroline. “I do not know whether it was fox poo or a dead fish, but it was so bad I was crying in the car on the way home.”

Caroline, an NFDOG supporter since the launch meeting in Lyndhurst in 2001, bathed Jasmine three times but still the foul smell persisted for days. It was so bad that it made her husband, Lennie, feel sick and Jasmine was banned from sleeping at the end of their bed.

Then, Caroline remembered a tip she had read in NFDOG’s October 2006 newsletter, recommending tomato ketchup to neutralise such smells. She searched the kitchen of her Lymington home and found some Somerfield own brand ketchup. Jasmine was put in the bath and the sauce was gently massaged into her coat.

The result? “Bliss,” said Caroline. “It worked a treat. To be honest, I was sceptical when I read the tip. Now I tell anyone who will listen.

“Jasmine is a serial roller in horrible things, and so it is no exaggeration to say this is a life-changing tip for me.”

NFDOG Membership Secretary Penny Gayler, who recommended ketchup in her regular advice column, said: “Most people do not think it will work, but it is amazingly effective. It is very satisfying when we can help members in some way.”

Meanwhile, Jasmine has been allowed back on Caroline and Lennie’s bed, and a bottle of tomato ketchup is kept handy in the kitchen----ready for the inevitable repeat performance.
