Sea Fever: from Turner to Today, FREE Admission FREE admission. Summer opening times Mon-Fri 10am-6pm Sat-Sun 11am-5pm The exhibition will demonstrate artists’ fascination with the sea and how the subject has been interpreted in art within a historical context. A relevant exhibition for Southampton, it examines our relationship with the sea, from work and leisure to times of contemplation. It will look at the pull the sea has had on many artists over the centuries and the intrigue and magic surrounding it. This includes traditional paintings representing sailing, to dramatic images of storms and rough waters, to the contemplative, calmer, romantic impression. It draws on highlights from the gallery’s permanent collection including Turner’s recently conserved Fisherman upon a Lee Shore in Squally Weather and Christopher Nevinson’s Loading Timber at Southampton Docks as well as a large number of loans from public and private collections including Barbara Hepworth’s Sea Form (Porthmeor), Maggi Hambling’s recent painting, Erosion and Julian Opie’s We swam in the Sea. |

Writers of Influence: Shakespeare to JK Rowling FREE Admission. Summer opening times Mon-Fri 10am-6pm Sat-Sun 11am-5pm Britain’s finest literary talents pictured in Southampton This exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery celebrates some of Britain’s finest literary talents. Writers of Influence: Shakespeare to JK Rowling features many important British writers and lyricists including William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, George Eliot, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, Virginia Woolf, Agatha Christie, John Lennon and Jarvis Cocker. The exhibition includes artwork by Vanessa Bell, Bill Brandt, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray, Patrick Heron and Lord Snowdon. One of the National Portrait Gallery’s most important possessions - the ‘Chandos’ portrait of William Shakespeare will be the centrepiece of the exhibition, displayed alongside 60 of the National Portrait Gallery’s most important literary portraits. |

“Friends” Fete and Hospital Open Day The League of Friends of Lymington New Forest Hospital has arranged an inaugural event in the hospital grounds to welcome members of the community to see over the hospital and learn of the achievements and ambitions of the League. Between 2pm and 5pm there will be a variety of stalls providing entertainment and fun for all the family. Cream teas, local produce, home made cakes, plants, books and bric-a-brac will be on sale and children’s attractions include a bouncy castle, beat the goalie, face painting and much more. A jazz band will be playing throughout the afternoon. By kind permission of the hospital management, guided tours of the hospital, conducted by some of the volunteers that regularly show patients and visitors to the clinics and wards, will be arranged at the League of Friends’ own stand. The event is intended to raise the profile of the League of Friends and also to raise funds, thus helping to ensure that the funding of new equipment and the continuity of the services provided at the hospital will continue into the future for the benefit of patients. Admission will be £1 for adults with children free. Car parking for the afternoon is free of charge. 2-5pm |
